To an American Hero, we say Thank You!

HERO – a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities.

Major Brent Taylor

Sempur Fidelis is a latin phrase meaning "always faithful" or "always loyal".  Although it is the motto of the United States Marine Corps, I believe that these words could be used to describe Major Brent Taylor of North Ogden.  Brent Taylor was faithfully serving as mayor of North Ogden City when he was called up for his 4th deployment with the Utah National Guard.  He faithfully accepted the call to go to Afghanistan to help train the Afghan Army commando battalion.  When he announced his deployment to the people of North Ogden, Mayor Taylor said, "Service is really what leadership is all about."

On November 3, 2018, Major Taylor was tragically killed by a rogue Afghan soldier during a combined training exercise with U.S. and Afghan forces.  His loss has been felt by everyone in our community.  He and his family have paid the ultimate sacrifice of any soldier and we say, "Thank You!"  He is truly an American Hero.

With the loss of such an incredible person, it reminds you and I of the importance of saying "Thank You" to all who wear, or have worn, the uniform of the United States armed forces.  It also reminds us to thank ALL who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in defending our country and our freedoms.  But most importantly, it reminds us to BE the kind of person that Mayor Brent Taylor was - a person of service to those in our community.

To the late Major Brent Taylor and his family, to his fellow guardsmen and to all who serve this great nation, may we say, "SEMPER FI!"

For those wishing to help the Taylor Family out

Major Brent Taylor leaves behind a wife and seven beautiful children ranging from 13 years - 11 months old.  A GoFundMe page has been created to help aid the family in the loss of their heroic husband.  We ask any who can to consider donating to help this amazing family who have sacrificed so much.  You can visit the GoFundMe page at the following link:

How to know when it’s time to replace your roof

  • a couple of months ago

A common question we are asked as professional roofers is, “How do I know when it’s time to replace my roof?”  That is an excellent question to be asking because waiting too long could be a costly mistake.  Here’s a roofers take on when it is time to replace your roof.

Are you near the end of the life rating of your shingle?

Asphalt shingles are given a life rating in years to indicate how long they might last.  Usually, this rating is anywhere from 25 years to 50 years.  The life rating doesn’t always mean that your roof will remain good for that long.  It is, however, estimated that an average asphalt shingled roof will last between 20 and 30 years.  If your roof has been installed for more than 20 years, you should consider having your roof inspected to see if it is time to have it replaced.

Do your asphalt shingles look ‘Shiny’?

Another sign that a roof is needing replacement is if the roof looks shiny when the light is hitting it.  Inside of every asphalt shingle are hundreds of tiny fiberglass fibers.  As the asphalt begins to break down, these fibers become exposed and reflect the light rays off of the roof.  If you notice your roof is looking a little shiny, it is time to get it replaced.

Do you see little rocks coming out of your rain gutters?

As an asphalt roof ages, the rocks that give the roof it’s color will become loose.  During periods of rain these rocks will wash down the rain gutters and onto the ground.  If you notice large amounts of rocks beginning to come off of your roof, it may be time to have your roof replaced.

Are the edges of your shingles curling back?

In Utah, our roofs are exposed to extreme temperature swings.  We have extremely cold winters and extremely hot summers.  These temperature extremes will weaken the integrity of the shingles on your roof and may cause the edges to curl back.  If you notice any curling or lifting of the shingles on your roof, it is definitely time to get your roof replaced.

Other signs that you cannot see

There are also hundreds of other signs that it is time to have your roof replaced that are not easily seen without a thorough inspection of the roof.  It is good idea to have your roof inspected by a roofing professional as it ages to help you determine when it may be time to consider replacing it.  When performing an inspection, the professionals at American Prestige Roofing will always be honest with you about the condition of your roof and provide any recommendations about replacement or repairs.  At American Prestige Roofing, we are the roofers you can trust.

Cleaning and inspecting rain gutters

  • a couple of months ago

Fall brings many beautiful things

For many people, Fall is their favorite time of year.  Who can blame them with all of the beautiful fall colors and scenery?  Along with the fall colors, though, comes preparation for the winter months ahead.  As the leaves fall, it isn’t uncommon to see people raking up leaves in the yard or cleaning out the flower beds.  With all that needs to be winterized at home, the important job of cleaning and inspecting rain gutters is often overlooked.

What am I looking for when cleaning and inspecting rain gutters?

Simple. You are looking for debris and leaks when cleaning and inspecting rain gutters.  As the leaves fall, they can cluster and clog the rain gutter drains.  Keeping the rain gutters free from leaves and other debris will prevent this clogging.  The other problem you are looking for is a leaky rain gutter.  Here is what may happen if your rain gutters leak:

  • Large icicles may form
  • Falling icicles can cause serious property damage or injury
  • Icicles may also lead to the formation of ice dams

Why should I clean out my rain gutters?

As professional roofers, we are often asked why it is important to clean the rain gutters each fall.  The biggest reason is that fall often brings wet weather as well.  The rainwater will try and flush the leaf debris out of your rain gutter, but often times it will get stuck in the downspout, causing the water to back up on to the roof.  As the weather turns colder, this water will form into ice and form an ice dam.  It is the formation of ice dams that can cause the greatest damage to your roof and home.

What is the best way to clean out my rain gutters?

The use of a leaf blower or vacuum is the simplest way to clean your rain gutters.  However, it is important to exercise caution when doing so.  Many slip and fall accidents at home come from falling off a ladder or the roof.  You might consider hiring a professional to perform the cleaning and inspecting of your rain gutters.

In conclusion

In preparation for winter, remember to take time to clean and inspect the rain gutters around your home.  Doing so will help prevent serious damage to your home and property.  Be sure to follow our blog for more tips on how to protect the investment of your roof and home.

The Benefits of Having a Professional Roof Inspection to Assess Storm Damage

  • a few months ago

A major storm can bring high winds, large hailstones, and even lightning strikes and large amounts of rain.  Any or all of these can cause storm damage to even the most sturdy roofs.

If after a storm you might assume you are okay if you don't see any visible signs of the roof leaking.  But this is often not the case.

Small or unseen damage may go undetected by a homeowner, and over time, it can get worse - leading to a large problem and a costly repair bill.

That is why after the passing of a major storm, it is a good idea to have a roof inspection by a professional roofing company.  Here are a few benefits of having your roof inspected for storm damage by a roofing professional:

1. Climbing on a roof can be dangerous

Many times the damage sustained to a roof following a storm cannot be seen from the ground.  It requires using a ladder and climbing up on the roof to do a thorough roof inspection.

Using a ladder and climbing around the roof yourself is honestly very dangerous.  A high number of injuries happen every year from home owners falling off a ladder getting on or off of the roof.  We highly recommend letting a professional assume that risk for you.

2. Knowing what to look for

Knowing what to look for is just as important as being safe on the roof.  When we do a roof inspection for storm damage, we will look over every square inch of your roof for the kinds of damage that are easy to overlook:

What we look for:

  • Cracked or curled shingles
  • Lifted or missing nails
  • Damage to vent seals
  • Broken vents
  • Structural damage
  • Damaged rain gutters and fascia

3. You'll need a professional roof inspection to file a claim

Probably the most important reason for having a roof inspection for storm damage is that you will need a professional assessment to file a claim with your insurance company.

The roofing professionals at American Prestige Roofing can help you contact your insurance company and provide them a full detailed report of the damage to your roof.  This will simplify the insurance claim process for you, giving you one less thing to worry about.

And finally,

The best benefit of having your roof inspected by American Prestige Roofing following a major storm is it's absolutely free.  Call the American Prestige Roofing professionals at 801-603-4308 to have your roof fully inspected.
