Why you should be thinking of winterizing the roof now!

Although we have a few more weeks left of summer, it's already time to start thinking of preparing for winter.  Because your roof is so important in keeping the elements out, we thought we would share a practical "Winterizing the roof" checklist.  As you follow this checklist for winter, you will relax knowing your family and your property will be safe.

The Winterizing the Roof Checklist:

  • Beware of and prepare for ice dams
  • Inspect the roof for any needed repairs
  • check
Make any necessary repairs before winter

Beware of and prepare for Ice Dams

In the winter time, the most common cause of roof failures are ice dams.  An ice dam is created as warm air escapes the home through the roof causing the snow to melt.  As the water reaches the cool edge of the roof, it freezes again.  Over time, this ice can build up and form what is called an ice dam.

As an ice dam forms, it can cause the shingles to be lifted, exposing the wood below.  As more snow melts, the water is held back by the ice dam causing it to leak through the exposed wood.  Eventually the water will make it's way into the home causing extensive damage to interior ceilings and walls.

Ways to prevent ice dams from forming

Here are ways you can prevent ice dams from forming on your roof during the winter.

  • Keep rain-gutters free from debris
  • Add more insulation to your attic
  • Install electric heat tape to north facing slopes

Inspect the roof for needed repairs

A roof that needs repair will not keep the elements out of your house. Missing or lifted shingles can lead to water leaking into the attic and causing damage to the ceiling of your home.  It is also important to inspect all flashing on the roof for cracks or sun rot.  If you are not comfortable getting up on your roof, an American Prestige Roofing professional may come and inspect your roof for you.  If we discover any problems, we can give you a roof repair estimate while we are there.

Make the necessary repairs before winter

The most important step of the "Winterizing the roof" checklist is to make sure all repairs are made before winter.  In rare cases, a repair may require a new installation of a roof rather than a repair.  It is important to give enough time for any repairs or installations to properly seal before winter comes.

If you are needing a roof inspection before winter or you are needing roof repair or roof replacement before the coming winter, trust the roofing professionals at American Prestige Roofing.  Call us at 801-603-4308 for an inspection or estimate today.

Understanding your roof warranty

A new roof on your home is a large investment that will provide shelter and protection to you and your family.  But what happens when a large wind storm comes along and causes the roof to fail?  That is where a roof warranty comes in to play.

What is a Roof Warranty?

Roof Warranty can cover unforeseen damageA roofing specialist may use the term “roof warranty” quite a bit while selling a roof. But I have wondered how many homeowners know what a roof warranty is and what it does? A roof warranty is simply a guarantee to protect your roof against failure.  Some warranties will also provide a replacement roof at the end of the life of the roof.  I hope to be able to explain the differences in roof warranties and how you can know what is and what is not a good roof warranty.

Manufacturer Warranty or Company Warranty?

A Roof warranty is usually offered either by the manufacturer or the roofing company. A manufacturer warranty requires that the roof is installed by a certified roofing contractor. This is to ensure that the roof will resist failure.  This warranty is a great option to consider because it will be honored even if the roof installers are no longer around.

A roof warranty offered by the roofing company is usually valid as long as the company is around to honor it.  Unlike a manufacturer’s warranty, the roofing company does not need to use certain materials or be installed a certain way to make it effective.  A roofing company’s warranty can be a good option to consider if the following criteria are met:

  • The roofing company is stable and will be around to honor the warranty
  • The roofing company is reputable and trustworthy.
  • The warranty includes labor as well as materials

There is a better option

lifetime workmanship warrantyA third option to consider is the combination of a manufacturer’s warranty and a company warranty.  At American Prestige Roofing, this is the type of warranty we provide for our clients.  This ensures the maximum protection for the homeowner.  In every warranty, there is the fine print to consider.  In some cases, the warranty will be voided because of details in the fine print.  The roofers at American Prestige Roofing feel that this isn’t good enough for our clients.  That is why our Lifetime Warranty will cover all materials and labor for you guaranteed.  That is simply the best warranty in the industry!
